The Swedish School in Toronto

When we as parents combine our knowledge, skills, interests, and other resources together, we can give our children more than we can as individuals. We can create a "Swedish Environment" which will hopefully reinforce the learning of the Swedish language. Celebration of Swedish holidays and festivities are a large part of this.

Our teaching is related to Swedish traditions, everyday matters and topics such as geography, history, culture and Swedish literature. We combine group- and individual work with singing, theater and games to build up skills in oral as well as written Swedish..

History of the School

When the Swedish school in Toronto was founded in 1983 under the auspices of SWEA it was a small group of Swedes who taught their children themselves. During the following years the group grew and was able to seek assistance from the Toronto District School Board and their program of International Languages ​​(1991-1992). Swedish Foreign Schools Society (SUF) has for many years worked hard to organize all Swedish schools abroad and the Agency's grants have also increased. Starting in the spring 2005 we were able to try starting some distance groups in Burlington, Etobicoke, Barrie and the Beaches. These groups meet once or twice a month. Half of the schooling was done at home with a parent as a teacher. For your child to participate in these groups we are required to meet the requirements for government grants under the Education Administration. The group at Gateway Public School is supported by the Toronto District School Board, and offers instruction every Saturday. In recent years the Burlington and Beaches groups were closed down (but might open up again with enough interest), and the Barrie group relocated to Collingwood.

A child learns a language when it is spoken by someone they love. A child learns the language it needs. The child receives a richer language if they encounter the language in many different contexts.

  • The mother tongue is very important for the child's identity and self-esteem.
  • The mother tongue is the basis of the child's ability to learn.
  • A bilingual child will learn a third language and many other subjects more easily.
  • It's a great benefit to society that many people are multilingual.


The school organizes a variety of activities besides teaching. We hope that as many people as possible can participate in trying to get the kids and students to socialize outside of class formats. The various activities typically include Lucia pageants with appearances at the SWEA Christmas Fair and the Swedish Church (organized by SWEA and the church separately), Christmas tree plundering, meat ball dinners, skating, film festivals, camping, etc. We welcome any suggestions on more / other activities. School membership and parental responsibilities

All parents who have their children enrolled in the Swedish School Association in Toronto are automatically members. We don't charge a separate membership fee. We expect instead that you voluenteer your time. The following are your responsibilities as a parent and a member.

  • To make your voice heard and know a little more about the business is expected that at least one parent from each family attends the annual meeting, typically held sometime in May.
  • The association is run entirely by volunteer labor. In previous years we have not had a membership but this takes its form in each member volunteering. Without volunteers can not go around school activities . Therefore it is important that all parents line up as often as they can. Two voluenteer assignments per year is expected as a minimum.
  • For those students who are learning and distance teaching requires a great responsibility of parents to participate in the education of your child. More than half of the studies are expected to take place in the home. It is important for students to go through the material they get sent home when the next lesson builds on work done in the home. But even for those families who do not get homework sent home are encouraged to talk with the teachers and take part of school so that the content of the lesson is reinforced with the children in the home .
