There are three ways to participate in the Swedish school:
1) Saturdays at Gateway
Location: Gateway Public School
Teacher: Åsa Andree
This program is run under and directed by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). Teaching takes place every Saturday at Gateway Public School between 09:30 to 12:00 . All children , regardless of background , ages 4-14 are welcome to participate.
2) Monthly Distance Learning in Etobicoke and in Barrie
The program is run by the Swedish School Association in Toronto with support from the Department of Education in Sweden. Group teaching is done one to two times a month at two locations:
- IKEA Etobicoke
- Barrie / Collingwood
Between lectures it is assumed that the students, with the support of parents / guardians, work independently on home assignments. Children aged 6-20 years with at least one Swedish parent, and where the Swedish language is living in the home (ie, the student shall have a basic knowledge of the Swedish language ) have the opportunity to participate. The aim of distance education is to maintain and further develop the Swedish in children who already have a basic knowledge of Swedish . Distance Teaching requires a lot of responsibility of parents to participate in education. More than half of the studies are expected to take place in the home. It is important for students to go through the material they get sent home when the next lesson builds on work done in the home.
3) Distance Learning from Sweden
There is also the opportunity to receive education directly from Sweden. Distance Teaching is via The Sofia School in Stockholm for students in grades 7-9 and via Värmdö Gymnasium in Stockholm for high school students. Distance Teaching from Sweden may be supervised by a teacher at the Swedish school. The application for this option is due on June 1.
